The Four Steps:

  • Make it Easy
  • Make it Attractive
  • Make it Easy
  • Make it Satisfying

Make It Obvious

Habits make your life go on autopilot. To create new ones, you must first make an effort and be aware of them. A simple way of doing this is by writing down everything you do in a day, no matter how small. After reviewing it, you’ll find out how productive you truly are.

One Space, One Use

We will experience resistance when starting because we use the same space for multiple purposes. Save your willpower and instead try to find new places where you will only do one designated thing. Soon your autopilot mechanism will kick in, and you will have no problems concentrating on your task.

Make It Attractive

Now that you have started implementing your new habit, you have to find a way not to overload yourself. One way to do this is by making your routine attractive, such as using Tempation Building. Temptation Building is where you pair something you have to do with something you want. It gives you enough gratification to keep going while getting stuff done.

Hang Around People Who Have Your Habit

You could surround yourself with individuals who already have your habit. We like to fit in, and if our friends or coworkers act a certain way, we subconsciously want to be like them. So try to stop hanging around people with the same bad habits as you and begin to be around people who act and look how you want to be.

Make It Easy

While planning, remember that sometimes it’s better to get up and start. Make the first few steps as simple as possible to make sure you start. The Two-Minute Rule is simple: Start if a task takes less than two minutes. The mental strain of thinking back, I know I have done this, for something that takes two minutes is not worth it. Even better, you could become invested after two minutes and keep going.

Make It Satisfying

All these tips will only be able to help you if there is consistency. If you see no immediate rewards for all your efforts, it will be hard to keep going long-term. Each case is different, but there should always be a way to reward yourself for all your efforts. The small wins will help you along the way.

Add Some Punishments

Whenever you fail to do what it is you need to do, add a punishment for yourself. It is important to mention that it shouldn’t be so severe that you can’t recover and quit. However, your penalty should also not be light since it would not be a punishment.

Afterword

Implement these four steps, and you will see yourself picking up hobbies left and right. While it might sound great on paper, getting a new hobby will still take effort. Even if you only use a few steps, you will find it easier to approach old habits.
